One of the most important things you can do to stop plastic pollution is speaking up when you see plastic waste. For example, if a hotel has free travel-size toiletries in the rooms, or if a coffee shop uses to-go plastic or Styrofoam cups, or if the item your ordered online comes surrounded by bubble wrap (don’t be fooled by the so-called “biodegradable” type – it only biodegrades in certain conditions), or if an event offers bottled water, or if your appliance is padded with polystyrene blocks...
You can ask to talk to managers of these businesses in person, call them up, write them a message, contact them through Facebook (this is possibly one of the most efficient ways). Or you can write a public review.
No matter which option you choose, don’t forget to be positive and polite, praising whatever you like about the business in question, and asking them to do better. These days, keeping in mind their environmental impact is becoming increasingly important for businesses, and they are more likely to take action when people express concern. Don’t be shy. Speak up!
