It is estimated that a woman living in the USA or Europe will go through 11,000 disposable menstrual products in her lifetime. That means a lot of plastic, since pads contain up to 90% plastic and many tampon applicators are 100% plastic. It also means lots of toxic substances (dioxin, pesticides, insecticides, glyphosate) that can have noxious effects on a woman’s health.
But there are alternatives that are much better for both the planet and the person: Organic tampons with reusable applicators, organic and reusable pads (bought or made), silicone or rubber menstrual cups or discs, and natural-fiber underwear. This website can help you find the best option for you and, if you want to learn even more, on July 28 you can attend the Plastic Pollution Coalition’s webinar entitled “Plastic Free Periods: Protecting Our Bodies & Preventing Plastic Pollution”.
